Insertion
loss
Insertion loss is the measure of
reduction in signal magnitude caused by inserting a
component, such as a connector, into a previously connected
optical path. This measurement allows for analysis
of the impact of inserting a single optical component
into a system, sometimes called “calculating a loss
budget.” Insertion loss is measured in decibels (dB).
