Core
The core of an
optical fiber denotes the central part of the fiber
where the majority of the light propagates. In
single mode fiber, the core is small in diameter (~8
μm), so that only one mode will propagate along
its length. By contrast, the core of multimode
fibers is larger (50 or 62.5 μm).
