10 Gigabit Ethernet

As Gigabit Ethernet moves out from the campus backbone and toward the desktop, a higher capacity Ethernet technology is needed at the network core. In 2002, a new 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard was ratified (IEEE 802.3ae) and today, 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches, routers, and fiber optic cabling are being deployed in carrier and enterprise networks around the world. Like Gigabit Ethernet , 10 Gigabit Ethernet has a lower cost short reach option (10BASE-S) designed with VCSEL’s to push light signals further and faster down multimode fiber, and long reach options (10BASE-L) for greater distance using single mode or multimode fiber with a mode conditioning patch cord.

Since 10 Gigabit Ethernet is 10 times faster than its predecessor, the distances that can be achieved over traditional multimode fiber are much shorter. The distance limitations associated with 62.5 micron fiber (outlined below) have accelerated the trend toward 50 micron, and have demanded new, high bandwidth, laser optimized fibers to be developed.

All components of the Fiber Connections EasyLAN solution are available using laser optimized fiber. Fiber Connections offers pre-terminated trunk cables, jumpers, and modules designed to meet the 10 Gig distance requirements for your network, all factory tested to guarantee the IEEE 802.3ae standards for attenuation and reflectance.
The Chart below outlines the available multimode fiber types and the associated guaranteed distance for 10BASE-S (850 nm VCSEL) and 10BASE-L (1310 nm laser).
